Winding - machines. - In a machine for winding yarn packages 16 having conical ends, and wherein the stroke of the traverse bar 1, Figs. 2 and 4, is progressively diminished by shortening the effective length of the actuating-lever 2, a regulator 14 is adjustably fixed to the fulcrum pin 3 of the lever 2 and is adapted alternately to lift the stationary pawl 11 and to allow it to engage the ratchet-wheel 12. The lever 2 is oscillated through a constant angle, e.g. by a cam 4 and is slotted to accommodate a crosshead 7 which may be raised or lowered on a screw 8, and which is coupled to the bar 1. A bevel-wheel 13 is fixed to the top of the screw 8 and engages with the combined bevel and ratchet-wheel 12 rotatable on the pivot 3. When the bar 1 is moved in the direction A, Fig. 2, the wheel 12 is rotated anticlockwise through the medium of the wheel 13 until the regulator 14 allows the pawl 11 to engage and hold the wheel 12 thus rotating the screw 8 and raising the crosshead 7. On the return stroke in the direction B. the wheel 12 will be rotated clockwise and the regulator 14 lift the pawl 11 in readiness for the next stroke. The device is re-set by means of a handle 17, Fig. 1, the holding-pawls 15 on the lever 2 being lifted by a trigger 18.
