Handles or holders with recessed-back retaining- devices for brushes.- Relates to brushes of the kind in which the bristles or tufts are mounted in a rubber or like flexible support which in conjunction with the stock or back of the brush forms a pneumatic cushion. The flexible bristle-support B is provided at or adjacent to its edge with a rubber or similar heading or rib B' and is retained in a recess A<1> in the brush-back A by means of a retaining-ring D which engages the rib B' and also fits into a relatively shallow groove formed in or around the edge of the recess. The metal or other ring D is preferably formed endless and is adapted to be pressed into its groove in the back A and to be held therein by friction. The groove is slightly undercut so that the ring D can expand slightly when pressed home. The rib B<1> may be of substantially semicircular crosssection and may be formed integral with the support B or secured thereto. An air vent may be formed by punching one or more eyelets into the support B. The back A may be formed of wood, precious or other metal, tortoise-shell, ivory, &c., or of a casein composition. A canvas or other backing E is provided on the back of the support B. The ring D may be dispensed with and the recess A<1> shaped so that it retains the rib B<1> when fitted within it. The invention is particularly applicable to hair-brushes.
