FREDERICK A. SHELTON, OF CHICAGO, ILLIOIS.
BRUSH.
Specification of Letters Eatent.
Patented Dec. 6, 1921.
Application filed January 7, 1921. Serial No. 435,584.
To all whom t 'may concern Be itlrnown that I, FREDERICK A. SHEL- ToN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident ot the city of Chicago, county ot Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements .in Brushes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in brushes and has for its object the provision of a brush comprising means which will enable the bristles to be worn down equally on both ends of the brush, and which will be economical of manufacture, simple in structure and highly etticient in use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The handled brushes, such as hat brushes. clothes brushes, shoe brushes, and the like, ordinarily used have the bristles attached directly to the body member, and in these devices the bristles at the toe or front end of the 'brush will wear down considerably without any material wear taking place on the heel or rear of the brush. It is to obviate this unequal wearing ot the bristles that applicant has provided a bristle bearing member independent of the main body portion of the brush and swingable or reversible with respect to the main body portion of said brush.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part ot this specitication, and in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the brush;
Fig. 2 is a plan view, showing the bristle bearing member swung 90O from the normal, and,
Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line 3 3, Fig.
The invention as illustrated in the draw ing comprises a brush having a body portion 6 provided with a handle 7 and a bristle bearing member 8. A slot 9 is provided on the back of the brush from which leads an opening 10 extending through the body member of the brush, and a corresponding opening 11 extends through the bristle bearl ing member. A threaded member 12 passes through the openings 10 and 11 in the brush and bristle bearing members, respectively, said threaded member being provided with a grooved head 13 which bears against the lower tace of said bristle bearing member and engages a-nut 14 nonrotatably seated in the slot 9. This threaded Lember and nut serve to retain the bristle bearing member in position upon the body portion of the brush by tightening said threaded member, as by means oi*l a screw driver; and by slightly loosening the said threaded member the bristle bearing mem ber may be swung upon said threaded member as an axis reversing the two ends of the bristle bearing member with respect to the body portion ot the brush, thereby bringing the heel with the unworn bristles in the former position ot the toe with its worn bristles, thus permitting the bristles upon both ends to be worn equally. These bristles may consist of hair, wire, rubber, iiber or the like. The bristles 15 are retained within the bearing member 8 in any convenient manner, as by means of wires.16 protruding through openings 17 to the back of the bearing member 8. These protruding portions of the bristle retaining wires or elements 1G upon the baclr of the bearing member serve also to retain the said bearing member in proper position upon the body member of the brush when the threaded member is tightened.
IVhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details Ot construction setviorth, but desire to avail myselic of such variations and modications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A. brush comprising a hand engaged member, a. bristle bearing member, means passing through openings in said members for retaining said members in position and. also permitting said members to be reversed with respect to each other, and means for fastening said bristles in said bristle bearing member, said means projecting beyond the back of said member for assisting said retaining means to retain said members in position.
2. A brush comprising a body member provided with a slot on the back thereof and an opening extending from said slot, a bristhreaded member passing through said openings, and Wires for fastening said bristles in said lbearing member and forming projections on the back of the bristle bearing member to engage the body member and as sist the` threaded member to retain said bristie bearing member in proper position on said body member. 1
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this speoieation in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
