(o1. 1541677) j My invention relates to new and useful improvements in brushes and more particularly to a tooth brush primarily intended for use with tooth powder as distinguished from tooth paste or liquid, although, when desired, might be used for cleaning the teeth with a paste or liquid.

The primary object of the invention resides in forming the brush head with projecting lip or ange portions upon which the powder is` placed, the lips or flange portions extending longitudinally of the brush head on each side of the bristles.

Another object of the invention consists in forming'the head with the projecting or en-` larged side portions adapted to support a supply of powder in position to be engaged by a lip of the user whereby the powder may be moved or worked up into contact with the bristles as the brush is being used. l

With the above and other objects in view, which will appeai1 as the description proceeds, my invention consists in the novel details of construction, and arrangement of parts, described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and while I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of the invention, as they now appear to me, it will be understood that such changes may be made as will fall within the scope of the appended claims.

Fig. 1 is a bottom plan with a portion of the brush handle broken away.

Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section through the brush head.

Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 showing the head of the brush tilted in position to receive the powder; and

Fig. 5 is a View similar to Fig. 3 showing a slightly modied form of the invention.

In the drawing 1 indicates the brush head, 2 the handle, and 3 the bristles. Formed on each side of the head, and extending longitudinally thereof, is a lip or fiange 4, the upper surface of which is preferably curved or dished, as shown at 5 more particularly in Figs. 2 and 4 of the drawing. The under surfaces of the lips or anges 4 are curved upwardly as shown at 6 and it will be noted that no sharp edges are presented for engagement with the mouth of the user. The outer edge of each of the lips or flanges 4 is lengitudinally curved as shown at 'l more particularly in Fig. 1 of the drawing.

In Fig. 4 of the drawing I have shown a supply of powder 8 supported on one of the lips or iianges 4 and it will be seen that the powder will be positioned adjacent the outer row of bristles for a purpose which will be later apparent.

In Fig. 5 of the drawing I have illustrated a slightly modified form of the invention in which the brush head is indicated at 9, the bristles at 1G, and the projecting lips or flanges, extending longitudinally of the head, at 11. In this form of the invention the upper surfaces of the lips or flanges are inclined as shown at 12 instead of being dished or curved as shown at 5 in the form ofr the invention disclosed in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive of the drawing. In this modified form of the invention the bottom surfaces of the lips or flanges are curved as shown at 13. In the form of the invention disclosed in Fig. 5 powder will be supported on the lips or flanges in the same manner as disclosed in Fig. 4 of the drawing.

YFrom the above it is thought that the construction will be clearly understood. When it is desired to use the brush the handle will be grasped by the user and the head will be tilted as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing so that a supply of powder may be discharged onto the lip or flange 4. The supply of powder will be positioned, as previously stated, adjacent an outer row of bristles. After the powder has been supplied to the head then the brush will be placed in the mouth with that lip or ange supporting the powder positioned downwardly so that the user may work or move the powder up ontothe bristles by movement of the lower lip. In this manner all of the powder supported may be used without waste. By providing a lip or flange 4 on each side of the head the brush may be used either by a right hand or left hand person. In the past considerable waste of powder has occured when an attempt has been made to sprinkle the same onto the bristles of the brush but with my improved form of brush the powder is supported without waste and in position to be worked into the bristles by movement of the lower lip.` Where the upper surface of the lips or flanges are curved or dished, as shown at 5 in Figs. 2 to 4 inclusive of the drawing, more or less cup-shaped flanges are provided to aid in supporting the supply of powder but I have found that the powder may be efliciently supported. against waste, with the upper surfaces of the lips or anges merely beveled or inclined as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawing wherein a modied form is illustrated. It will be understood that the brush may be used in the usual or well-known manner if it is desired to use a paste or a liquid as distinguished from a powder and the lips or

4 and 11 are of such a width so that the head of the brush is not unnecessarily enlarged. While I have illustrated the well-known elongated form of head containing the bristles it will be understood that different shaped heads might equally as well be used with an outwardly directed lip or ange on each side of the bristles positioned to receive the powder.

Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent isz- 1. A. brush of the character described including a head portion having bristles and a longitudinal lip extending substantially horizontally a substantial distance outwardly from a side edge of the head.

5. A brush of the character described including a head portion having bristles and a longitudinal lip projecting from the side of said head portion for supporting material, said lip having its upper surface downwardly and outwardly inclined.
