Abstract

677,741. Brushes. COHEN, E. Jan. 22, 1951 [Jan. 17, 1950], No. 1149/50. Class 19. A water-fed brush is characterised in that the stock has an internal water reservoir which communicates with outlets between the roots of the "bristles," certain of the outlets having tubular extensions adapted to convev the water directly to the bristle tips and to wear down at substantially the same rate as the bristles during use of the brush. The tubular extensions may be formed of synthetic resin or rubber. The stock comprises a replaceable bristle-carrying portion detachably secured to a permanent portion with which the handle is associated, the inner surfaces of the two portions defining the water reservoir. The joint between the two portions is made water-tight by an interposed gasket of resilient material having a marginal extension adapted to serve as a buffer. In the figures the "bristle" tufts A, formed of fibre or other suitable material, are secured in sockets B in the portion C of the stock. This portion is detachably secured to an upper portion E associated with the handle F. Either or both of the internal faces of the stock portions may be recessed so as to form an internal reservoir but if both stock portions are of non- resilient material it is preferred to provide flat faces which are spaced apart by an interposed rubber gasket to form the water reservoir at K. The gasket is formed at its outer periphery with a continuous flange L which serves as a buffer. The upper portion E is formed with a socket M in which the handle F is detachably or otherwise secured. The handle may have a hose connection N at its free end and may be of metallic tubular construction or formed with a longitudinal bore so that water can pass through it. Alternatively a hose may be attached to the outside of the handle. The lower portion C of the stock is formed with a plurality of small outlets O and in some of these outlets tubes P are fixed which terminate at or near the tips of the bristles. The inherent rigidity of the tubes P is not greater than that of the bristles and the flexible nature of the tubes allows them to be expanded into frictional engagement with the stock portion C by means of tapered metal ferrules Q which are driven into the outlets O.
