Abstract

Porous concrete &c.-The press cake obtained in sugar refining and consisting chiefly of calcium carbonate and colloidal substances (albumen, casein, oil, &c.) is used with an acid to generate gas bubbles in a plastic mass. This may be composed of cement, plaster, lime, magnesia, insulating earth, clay, &c., with or without fillers such as sand, pumice, &c. The binding-agent is preferably triturated with a small addition of agar-agar, or a similar agglutinant. The stability of the bubbles is increased by the addition to the mass of a proportion of clay or of an additional quantity of the press cake emulsified in each case with water or resinous materials. In using the apparatus shown in the Figure, the ground cake is placed in the lower mixing chamber h and the mortar in the upper vat k; acid is added by the pipe u and the stirring blades c are set in motion, mixing the materials and also entraining air bubbles through the pipe j. The expansion of the mortar is controlled by the piston m. After the reaction is complete the mass is discharged through the doors x, the stirrer n being meanwhile rotated to ensure uniformity.
