Hydrocarbon, cracking; hydrogenation, destructive.-In the destructive hydrogenation and other heat treatment of pasty carbonaceous materials, tar, mineral oils, &c. for the production of liquid products, the material is preheated in vessels, the walls of which serve as electric resistances. Tar, for example, is passed slowly through a long tube of iron, alluminium, or raw-nickel-chromium alloy heated electrically to 420‹ C. ; the two ends of the tube may be earthed, and the current supplied at the centre. If desired, the same method of heating may also be employed in the reaction vessel. Specification 20470/13 is referred to.
