Cutting slices in succession.-In a discknife reciprocating table machine, the knife is driven by an electric or other motor, and the carriage is driven from the knife through a slip-coupling whereby the operator may accelerate or retard the linear speed of the table without altering the rotational speed of the knife. The acceleration or retardation may be effected by grasping a handle on the table and assisting or resisting the reciprocating motion. As shown in Fig. 3, the shaft 18 which is driven by the chain 27 and sprocket 26 from the knife shaft and has a bevel 17 which drives the crank and connecting rod for the reciprocating table, carries one part 21 of a slip coupling, the other part 22 being secured to the sprocket 26, one or both parts 21, 22 being faced with friction material. The shaft 18 is journaled in a screwed bush 24 which is adjustable to vary the pressure of the spring 23 which keeps the parts 21, 22 in engagement. The crank shaft carries a flywheel. The bush 24 may be retracted to such an extent that the reciprocation of the table is effected entirely by hand. In a modification, the flywheel and the handle on the table are dispensed with, and an ordinary hand-wheel is provided which is used by the operator to assist or resist the motion of the table.
