Pumping-machines; starting, facilitating.-The arrangement described in the parent Specification for starting a centrifugal pump and cooling a water ring pump is modified by the interposition of an auxiliary tank 10 in the bye-pass between the two pumps, and the bye-pass is only opened when the liquid in the tank reaches a predetermined level. The water ring pump 2 may be on the same shaft as the centrifugal pump 1. The suction and discharge ports of the pump 2 communicate with the tank 10, and the suction pipe 4 of the centrifugal pump 2 is also in communication with the tank 10 by a pipe 7 closed at its lower end by a valve 8 which can be opened by a float 11. At starting, the pump 2 draws air from the suction side of the centrifugal pump and discharges it through the pipe 5 into the liquid in the tank 10 from which it escapes by the pipe 6. After the suction pipe 4 has been freed from air the pump 2 discharges water and the level in the tank 10 rises. The float 11 then opens the valve 8 so that water circulates from the pipe 4 through the pump 2, pipe 5, tank 10 and pipe 7. If the level falls, the valve 8 closes and the cycle of operations is repeated. The arrangements may be used with benzine and similar liquids.
