Coking processes.-A method of distilling solid fuels consists in conveying them, in layers permeable to gases, through a heating chamber or tunnel in which they are subjected to the action of a gaseous heating medium which contains an excess of steam. The hot gases circulate in a direction transverse to that of the movement of the fuel and are re-heated before re-entering the fuel, the distillation products and heating gases passing from one cross-section of the fuel to the next and thus heating the fuel throughout the length of the chamber. Fans or injectors are employed to cause circulation of the gases. Pipes may be provided for taking off distillates separately from various points in the chamber.
