Abstract
329,413. Fawcett, Preston, & Co., Ltd., and Atherton, W. Feb. 28, 1929. Heating containers before scaling, furnaces for; charges, conveying.-Tobacco, cigars, cigarettes, or like materials contained in boxes or containers o which are subsequently to be sealed against admission of air, are moved through a heating retort by means of a conveyer, over a perforated stationary plateway 12 through the holes of which hot gases of combustion or other hot gases are allowed to pass, thereby coming into contact with the containers. The conveyer comprises spaced transverse rods 13 which engage the containers and are moved through the retort by means of endless chains 16. On the ends of the rods 13 are rollers 14 which run on rails extending through the retort. The containers are filled with the tobacco and are sealed except for a small aperture; they are then pushed through the retort by means of the conveyer rods, during which process they become heated and the air is driven out of the containers. At the other end of the retort, the containers, whilst they are still hot, are sealed against admission of air. The heating is conveniently effected by means of gas burners below the plateway 12, but the use of liquid fuel, electricity, steam, hot air is also mentioned.
