Abstract

278,730. Associated Telephone & Telegraph Co., (Assignees of Hudd, A. E.). Oct. 6, 1926, [Convention date]. Electromagnets; magnets.-A speed control device on a train is controlled by permanent magnets and electromagnets on the track which inductively operate a polarized contact-making armature. The inductor contact maker for cooperation with a permanent magnet or an electromagnet on the track, Fig. 8, comprises two pole-pieces 102, 103 between which is pivoted an armature 105 polarized by a horseshoe magnet 121. The pole-piece 103 is carried from an axle box by a non-magnetic bracket 101 and is fitted with iron wires 104 which mav contact with the track-magnet to provide a good magnetic circuit. The pole-pieces 102 is suitably bent and attached to the axle box; the magnetic circuit includes the train wheel, rail 100, an offset bracket 114 clamped to the rails, and magnet 112 secured to the bracket by magnetic bolts the heads 111, 125 of which form poles of the magnet. The armature is biassed to remain in either position to which is moved according to the polarity of the upper end of the last track magnet passed, or it may be reset to its initial position by a resetting coil 124 wound on the pole-piece 103. Specifications 290,587 and 290,588; 293,431, [Class 105, Railway signals &c.], and 293,432 are referred to.
