Abstract

Drying-furnaces; air-heating furnaces. - The gases produced by the combustion of liquid fuel are mixed with air for the artificial drying of crops, the apparatus comprising one or more combustion chambers a extending within an air conduit f connected at one end to a suction fan and open at the other end to the atmosphere, the rear wall a<1> of the combustion chamber being formed with passages a<2> governed by a plate h, and each combustion chamber having an outlet chimney g controlled by a slide or lid 9<SP>1>. Liquid fuel is supplied from a tank c to the burner b and air is supplied to the burner through a pipe e. Internal baffles a<3> are arranged within the combustion chamber to deflect the burning gases. An annular wire .grid f<1> is provided at the open end of the conduit f, and shutters or dampers may be provided for regulating the volume of air drawn into the conduit. In use the. passages a<2> are at first closed, the slide g<1> opened, and liquid fuel burned in the combustion chamber until the interior walls have become incandescent. The suction fan is then started, the passages a<2> opened, and the slide g<1> closed, the mixed air and combustion products being conveyed to and passed through the material to be dried.
