Air and gases, controlling temperature, humidity, and direction of flow of.-Wood and other material is dried by furnace or like gases which have been deprived of soot in a, depositing chamber and mixed with steam or cold air, means being provided for admitting the steam either simultaneously with or subsequently to the separation of the soot. As shown, the fan d draws the gases from the chimney a over the tubes f, which are arranged quincuncially within the chamber, and forces them into the drying space, the soot falling into the pan i. Cold air may be drawn through the openings k into the chamber and through the tubes and steam supplied through the pipe o. The proportion of air or steam mixed with the gases is controlled by a damper having an index outside the chamber. Thermometers and hydrometers may be placed at the entrance to the drying space, and the gases may be humidified by passing them through or over water instead of mixing with steam.
