Abstract
278,235. Jansen, H. J. Feb. 7, 1927. Hydrocarbons, cracking; evaporating by contact with hot liquid. - In cracking hydrocarbons by passing them through molten material, preferably molten lead covered by a layer of molten zinc chloride, the hydrocarbons being caused to pass horizontally through the molten material, the latter has only a small free surface where the vapours are discharged and the vapours are passed through the bath at such speed that any carbon formed is carried away. The cracking vessel comprises two horizontal pipes 11, 12 jointed bv vertical pipes 13, 14. Molten metal is supplied from an inlet 15, and the cracked vapours pass off through a dome 4. The process is only applicable directly to hydrocarbons containing a small proportion of carbon and forming no liquid or heavy cracking residue. Hydrocarbons containing a large proportion of carbon receive a preliminary cracking in a similar apparatus in which the dome is divided by a partition 42, Fig. 3 transverse to the flow of vapour and by a partition 43 forming a lateral extension of the wall of the cracking chamber.
