Cellulose xanthates, processes for making filaments and films from.-For the manufacture of artificial silk, artificial horsehair, artificial straw, flms, &c. from viscose, there are added to the spinning bath substances which depress the rate of diffusion of the acid into the viscose, the substances being added in a proportion determined by a prelimnary test based on the measurement of the rate at which acid will diffuse in the presence of the substance in question through a film of cellulose, &c. In the case of a sulphuric acid bath, the amount to be added is such as to reduce the rate of diffusion of the acid by 10-25 per cent. Suitable substances are naphthol sulphonic acid condensed with formaldehyde. phenol urea resin solubilized by treatment with sulphuric acid, sulphite pulp lye, carbazole sulphonic acid, sulphonated cumarone resin, naphthalene sulphonic acid condensed with formaldehyde, sulphonated machine oil. sulphonated lignite tar oil, the sulphonic acid of aromatic hydrocarbons which is heated until the first formed insoluble products have become soluble, oxymethyl-naphthalene sulphonic acid, and water-soluble sulphonic acids cf the products obtained by fusing phenols with sulphur, or the salts of the above-mentioned acids. The additions are particularly applicable for use in the case of immature viscose prepared from immature alkali cellulose.
