Spreading liquids. - Liquids such as transformer oils are degassed by spreading them in thin layers having large surfaces by centrifugal force, within a container which is exhausted by a vacuum pump. The vessel 1 contains a number of fixed conical surfaces 4 which alternate with conical surfaces 3 carried by a rotary spindle 2. The inlet 6 for the liquid has a valve 11 controlled by a float 8. The pipe 5 is connected to the air pump. The liquid drops near the centre of the top rotary plate 3 and is spread out in a thin layer; it escapes over the upper edge and drops on to the first fixed plate 4 along which it travels to the centre and drops on to the second rotary plate. This action is repeated until the liquid collects in the lower part 7 of the vessel 1, and gas is drawn off through the pipe 5. When the liquid rises sufficiently to operate the float 8 the valve 11 closes the inlet 6 to stop the supply of liquid. During the operation of the machine, the whole apparatus, or the liquid only, may be heated to assist the de-gassing operation. A suitable container for the de-gassed liquid is shown in Fig. 2 and has corrugated metal walls 14 secured to metal rings 13.
