Electrodes; amalgamating. - In a storage battery employing a lead anode, the cathode consists of an alloy of zinc, nickel and copper which is amalgamated and covered with zinc. The cathode may be made of gauze or a sheet of the alloy and is folded up as shown in Fig. 3, distance-pieces being placed between the folds to allow circulation of electrolyte. The folded electrode is placed between two wood sheets 7, as shown in plan in Fig. 4, and the whole placed in a perforated case 8 of celluloid &c. Conducting wires 4 are threaded through openings in the electrode as shown in Fig. 3. For large storage batteries the cathode is made in sections as shown in Fig. 6, separate insulated leads 10 being provided for each section. The top and bottom edges of the electrode shown in Fig. 3 may be folded over to form beadings for retaining mercury.
