Abstract
274,700. Holliday & Co., Ltd., L. B., and Shaw, C. Nov. 26, 1926. Chloranil; bromanil.-Chloranil and bromanil are produced by the chlorination and bromination respectively of p-nitrosophenol. In one example, chlorine is passed into a mixture of p-nitrosophenol and hydrochloric acid which is gradually warmed. The chloranil which is precipitated as, a light brown powder is recrystallized from benzene. In a second example, bromine is added to a mixture of p-nitrosophenol and glacial acetic acid, and the temperature of the mixture is gradually raised as before. The excess bromine is distilled off, and the brown bromanil which is precipitated is dissolved in nitric acid and reprecipitated.
