Abstract
273,344. May, K. P. June 28, 1926, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. Butt joints; joints formed by molten metal, cement, and the like; joints with packing actuated by fliud pressure.-Fluid-tightness between the jointing flanges of pipes 1, 2 is secured by a packing ring 3, Fig. 5, which is positioned within a chamber 8 having the form of a recess in the pipe ends and lying broadside-on to the joint face. The chamber is preferably of rectangular or trapezifoim cross-section and is so constructed that the packing ring, which may be of lead wool, soft metal &c., is subjected to the internal fluid pressure. In a modification, Fig. 1, the internal wall of the packing chamber is omitted and replaced by a perforated protecting ring 4 by which the packing ring 3 is retained in position. The packing ring may be wound from a strip in two or more layers or of two different kinds of materials. In an alternative construction, Fig. 7, an annular bridging piece 11 of hard material with its ends surrounded by or carrying packing material is inserted in the packing chamber, while in a further modification, Fig. 11, the packing chamber is provided with a casting aperture 15 through which soldering material &c. can be poured.
