PLUMBING Filed Jan. 27, 1939 INVENTOR 0/4216; P2765 ATTORNEY Patented Oct. 17, 1939 UNITED sTATEs PATENT OFFICE PLUMBING Charles Price, New York, N. Y. I Application Jamar, 27, 1939, Serial No. 253,092
l'Claim. (01. 285-115) g This invention relates to plumbing. It is particularly directed to the connection between a branch lead pipe and a soil stack, and the method of making the same.
I-Ieretofore, lead branch pipes have been connected to soil stacks by means of an interconnecting ferrule, ordinarily made of brass or the like material, and having a flange at one end only, received within the hub of a soil pipe and calked thereto. The lead pipe heretofore has been inserted into the opposite unflanged end of the ferrule, and a wiped joint was made by molding or wiping a mass of solder about the junction of the lead pipe and the cylindrical outer periphery of the ferrule, at the time of making the installation. The making of the wiped joint requires special skill and care, in order to produce a strong bond without leakage. The making of this joint requires not only experience but ability on the part of the plumber.
In modern plumbing practice, wiped joints have been eliminated in many places, and it has been found that plumbers do not get enough experience and practice in making wiped joints, and for this reason it has often been difficult to obtain plumbers who are capable of making a really good wiped joint, Furthermore, the making of a wiped joint consumes considerable time and requires a relatively large amount of solder, and is hence costly as now made. Itis therefore an object of this invention to provide a connection between the lead branch and the soil stack which will save solder and require less time in making the connection, and less skill, and yet produce a strong and durable joint, which shall be smooth, practical and efiicient to a high degree.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed .out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplifled in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claim.
In the accompanying drawing, in which is shown one of the various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention:
Fig, 1 is a side elevational view illustrating a connection between the lead branch and the soil pipe, embodying the invention, with parts in cross-section; and
Fig. 2 is an enlarged, cross-sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring now in detail to the drawing, Ill designates a. soil stack made up of interfltted cast iron pipes including a TY pipe II, having a vertical portion I2, and a branch I3 extending to one side, provided with a usual enlarged hub l4.
Attached to the branch I3 of the TY connection II, is an improved ferrule I5 made of cast brass or the like suitable material. The ferrule I5 comprises a cylindrical wall I6, and outwardly extending annular flanges I! and I 3 at the opposite ends thereof. ferrule I5 is received within and calked to the hub I4 in the usual manner, as at I9.
One end 20 of a lead branch or bend 2I is inserted within the ferrule I5. The outer diameter of the portion 20 of the branch 2i is substantially equal to the inner diameter of the One end of the 1 cylindrical wall N5 of the ferrule. The portion 28 of the lead bend is beat against the inner surface of the ferrule in the usual manner.
In accordance with the present invention, bend 2I is attached to the ferrule I5 by means of an annular wiped joint 22, extending between the outer surface 23 of the flange I8 and the outer surface of the lead branch, adjacent said flange. Said outer surface 23 of the flange I8 of said ferrule is first scraped clean and then tinned by the application of flux, after which is the annular corner between said outer surface, and the outer surface of the lead branch is filled with solder by wiping the solder all around, to produce the wiped joint 22.
I-Ieretofore, the usual plumbers brass ferrule has been made with only one flange I! inserted into the hub I4, and a wiped joint has been made by covering the outer cylindrical surface of the ferrule and the adjacent outer surface of the lead branch. Such a wiped joint requires considerable skill and knack, and has been found toconsume considerable time and use up a relatively large quantity of solder.
In accordance with the present invention there is a considerable saving in time and material, as
the wiped, joint 22 requires less solder and is easier and quicker to make, and does not require as much solder.
I have found that wiped joints such as disclosed herein, are strong and durable, and practical and highly eificient, while easy to make.
The lead branch 2| may be connected to the usual annular ring 25, on which a bowl is mounted, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing.
In Fig. 1 there is shown a ferrule I5 connected to the upper end of the vertical portion of the TY connection in the usual manner, and con nected to a lead branch 2l'a by the improved wiped joint 22.
In ferrules now in use, a considerable length of the ferrule must be filed or scraped and tinned by the application of fiux to receive the solder of the wiped joint. With the present invention, the ferrule may be made considerably shorter than heretofore by reason of the elemination of the necessity for scraping and tinning the outer surface of the cylindriical wall of the ferrule.
The length of the pipe 20 inserted into the ferrule depends upon the location of the annular ring 25. If the ring 25 is to be located more to the left, a greater length of the lead bend 2! is inserted into the ferrule.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted.
to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as. various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying'drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
In combination, a ferrule having a cylindrical wall, and outwardly extending, annular flanges at the opposite ends of said wall, one flanged end of said ferrule being adapted to be inserted into the hub of a soil pipe and calked thereto, a lead pipe having a portion received within the other end of said ferrule, the outer diameter of said pipe being substantially equal to the inner diameter of said ferrule. and a wiped joint between the outer surface of the flange at said other end of said. ferrule and the outer surface of the portion of the pipe adjacent thereto.
CHARLES PRICE.
