Abstract

273,293. Tourne, C. June 22, 1926, [Convention date]. Vacuum tubes. - A valve has a continuous filament of length equal to that of several sections of active filament, and means for replacing a burnt-out or defective section without opening the bulb. As shown, the length of filament not in use is carried by a bobbin 6, and the filament passes through a tubular guide 7 and is secured between a fixed lower clamp 8 with spring jaws, and an upper spring clamp 8<1> sliding in a tube 9, which is screwthreaded to receive a bar 10 of soft iron with guides 11 operating in a slot in the tube. Rotation of the bar by means of an external magnetic field thus causes longitudinal movement of the clamp 8'. A burnt-out section of filament is replaced by causing the clamp 8<1> to move downwards so that it passes over the clamp 8 and its jaws are opened thereby and subsequently closed to grip the filament. The clamp 8<1> is then moved in the reverse direction so as to open the jaws of the lower clamp 8, which close subsequently so as to grip the filament, but less tightly than the clamp 8<1>. The electrode structure is held within the bulb by springs 13. The vacuum may be improved by burning out several sections of filament.
