Abstract
272,977. Bernd, A. von. Feb. 17, 1926. Mercury and other conducting liquid switches have two chambers x, y connected by a large passage and by a throttled passage 2 so as to give a quick make and slow break when tilted, the throttled passage having conducting liquid in and on both sides of it in all positions of the switch. Fig. 1 shows a form having contacts 1, 2 in insulating tubes 9, 8. Tilting of the apparatus through 90‹ allows liquid to flow rapidly from y to x through the space 12 and to connect the contacts 1, 2. When the apparatus is tilted back the liquid flows slowly from the tube 8 through the passage 2 till it falls below the level of the tube 9 when connection between the contacts 1 and 2 is broken. Fig. 6 shows a form in which the throttle 2 has chambers 31. 32 on each side of it, and Fig. 18 shows a switch with nuts 122, 126 for adjusting the extreme positions of the switch.
