Abstract

272,962. Zaschka, E. June 18, 1926, [Convention date]. Helicopters; steering and balancing. - The stability of a helicopter is maintained by a rotating mass or gyroscope geared to a lifting screw to rotate in the same or opposite direction and at the same or a greater speed. The blades of the screw are reversible in incidence to enable the screw to drive the gyroscope during a descent after engine failure, the momentum of the gyroscope being utilized to check the descent at landing by again reversing the incidence of the blades. A propeller for forward propulsion is provided which also is adapted to be clutched to the gyroscope. This propeller may be swivelled from side to side for steering, or brakes selectively applied to oppositely rotating parts of the lifting screw and gyroscope may be provided for this purpose. The gyroscope itself may be formed as a lifting screw.
