Machines with rotary wing systems; controlling; starting. -The forward propelling means of an aircraft having freely rotative wings are mounted so that normally their r total thrust has substantially no moment about the centre of gravity. In a machine having a fixed engine the axis of the tractor propeller if produced would pass through the centre of gravity. Fig. 2 illustrates a machine in which the engine 35 is rockably mounted on trunnions 38<x> to allow of varying the, axis of thrust to positions above and below the centre of gravity. Control is effected by sector-and-pinion gear operated from a chainwheel 45, which, as shown, is provided with a hand-wheel 46 but may be mounted on or geared to the control cross-shaft operating the elevators. According to the Provisional Specification the engine may be tilted to cause the; slipstream therefrom to pass through the disc area of the rotative wings 32 for starting them in rotation.
