Abstract

272,189. Mond, A. L., (Maschinenfabrik Oerlikon). June 2, 1926. Dynamos, regulating; motors, controlling; protective devices, auxiliary.- A dynamo-electric machine is rapidly de-excited, as a protective measure, by arranging that its exciter is converted from its normal operation as a shunt-excited machine to series excitation with a resistance connected in parallel with its own exciting coil. Such a series connection establishes oscillations in the excitation circuit which rapidly de-excite the machine and annul its residual field, The Fig. shows a form in which the field coils E of a generator G are energized by an exciter A, the field coils e of which are connected with the armature and a resistance R by means of a. two-pole switch S<1>, For normal operation of the generator G, the switch is in the position I and the exciter runs as a shunt-wound machine with the resistance R short-circuited. When the generator suffers any damage, the switch is moved to the position II and the exciter is connected as a series-wound machine with the resistance R in parallel with its series coils.
