Operating and controlling doors by springs and weights; stays.-Doors and like members a are flexibly held in an open position by a chain, cord, or rod attached to the ceiling and engaging the door, and by means which has a tendency to maintain the cord &c. in a perpendicular position. A cord or other member c is attached at one end to the upper edge of the door and at the other end to a tension spring d that is anchored to a hook e secured to the ceiling. When the door is moved from the partly-open position shown, the spring is stretched and tends to return the door. Instead of using a spring, a weight may be attached to the end of the cord and be movable in a guide located on the upper part of the door remote from its hinges.
