Molten metals, removing occluded gases and other impurities from by agitation and other mechanical treatment.-In an apparatus for purifying and deaerating molten iron and other metals, the molten metal flows by a spout 2 from a furnace 1 or from the forehearth of the furnace into a ladle 3, instead of the forehearth described in the parent Specification. The ladle 3 is agitated or jogged during the pouring of the metal by cams 13 engaging abutment 12 and is pivotally suspended by pins 9 in bearings 10 on a fixed frame 11, being supported therein by bands or loops 4 from a crane 5. The ladle 3, which is provided with a cover 6 with an opening 7 therein and a slag wall 8, is provided with a projection 17 which rests on a yielding bearing 16. Instead of a ladle or drum a crucible may be used.
