Abstract
297,759. Corsalli, F. W. June 23, 1927. Purifying and refining; molten metal, reinoving imprurities from by agitation.-In a process for improving and purifying molten metals and alloys, the molten metals are intermixed and shaken on flowing through a mixing device by a swinging or rotating movement or by impact alternately in opposite directions and then are subjected to further vibration in the same manner in a collector. The mixer and collector may be vibrated by a separate or common means and the improving materials, e.g. carbon, alloy additions or purifying materials such as aluminium or soda, may be added to the molten metals &c. before they are fed into the mixer. The mixer 1 and collector 2, Fig. 1, are formed in one and are provided with bosses 3 resting on blocks 4. The apparatus is jogged by the engagement of uniformly rotating cams 5 with projections 6 on the bottom of the vessel 2. The molten metal &c. passes from the smelting furnace through an orifice 7 into the mixer 1 and flows through channels 8, 8<a>, Fig. 2, finally passing by the opening 9 into the collector 2. A heating device of any known kind may be applied at 11 and the purified metal is run off at 12, the slag &c. being led off through the opening 10. In a modification, Fig. 4, the mixer 1, which may be fixed or vibrated separately from the collector, is provided with chambers 18 for the molten metal &c. and 19 for the additives and also with inclined connecting channels 8. The metal &c. flows through an opening 20 into the collector 2 which is adapted to be oscillated about an axis 16 and is provided with internal projections. In addition to or in substitution of the heating device in Fig. 1, furnace gases may be passed into the collector 2 near the opening 9 so that part of the gases pass through the latter opening and part across the metal and through a by-pass pipe leading to the upper series of channels 8, 8<a>.
