Abstract

270,905. Buroz, G. May 28, 1926. Gravity-feed lubricating; preventing congelation of lubricant; brushing-apparatus.-Lubricant is supplied to a rail 9 from a receptacle 10 through a pipe 30 which is so mounted that its discharge end can be moved laterally to and from the rail, the flow of lubricant being controlled by a valve 17. The receptacle is mounted on a carriage 3 provided with rollers 6, 8 engaging the rail and is provided with a handle 15 for propelling the apparatus along the rail. The valve 17, which is normally closed by a spring 20, controls an outlet 16 in the bottom and at the rear of the receptacle. A pin 21 on the valve rod 18 is adapted to be engaged by a pivoted arm 22 to which is connected a flexible element 24, the other end of which is secured to a pin 25 slidable in a sleeve 27 mounted in the handle 15. The pipe 30 is adapted to swing about a pipe 29 secured to the receptacle 10 and communicating with the outlet 16. The lower end of the pipe 30 is normally held spaced from the rail 9 by a spring 32 coiled around the upper end of the pipe, one end of the spring being connected to an arm 31 on the pipe and the other end being secured to the base 3. A spring-pressed brush 35 is mounted in a chamber 33 in the lower end of the pipe 30, lubricant passing to the brush through a hole 34. Lubricant also passes directly to the tree end of the brush through an opening 37. The end of the arm 31 is connected to a spring 38, the other end of which is connected to a flexible element 39 which is also attached to the pin 25. The elements 24, 39 are passed around guides 26. When the pin 25 is pulled up, by means of a ring 28, the valve 17 is opened and the pipe 30 swung to bring the brush 35 into contact with the rail. A mixture of graphite and water is use'd as the lubricant, and the mixture is stirred during travel of the apparatus along the rail by a stirring blade 40 driven by bevel gearing 42, 43 from a shaft 44 driven by a chain 47 from the roller 8.
