Projectiles.-Relates to compositions of white phosphorus for use in containers adapted to be burst to produce a cloud of smoke, and consists in reducing the temperature of the air involved in the combustion of the phosphorus by disseminating in the air in admixture with the phosphorus another substance having no chemical reaction with the phosphorus, for example, hydrated gelatin, to which may also be added small quantities of molasses and red phosphorus. 11,3 per cent of gelatine is mixed with 7.3 per cent of water and heated to 60‹ C. The other ingredients, comprising 75.4 per cent of white phosphorus, 2 per cent of red phosphorus, and 4 per cent of treacle, are then added and vigorously stirred, preferably in an atmosphere of inert gas. The emulsion is filled into a container, where it is allowed to cool. The container is afterwards sealed and provided with a bursting charge in the usual manner. In a modification, white phosphorus is subdivided into minute globules by agitation in a solution of urea in water or in dilute sulphuric acid, and then mixed by agitation with water and plaster of Paris.
