Abstract
269,206. Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Bethel, C., and McCloskey, F. W.). April 12, 1926, [Convention date]. Casings; armatures and field magnets, cooling and ventilating. -A dynamo-electric machine such as a motor for use on a railway, is provided with intakes for air cooling annular lubricant chambers surrounding the bearings and also the motor armature, the commutator being protected from grit &c. carried by the air. The shaft 4 rotated in bearings 5, 6 enclosed in housings 7, 16, in which are arranged annular lubricant chambers 13, 21 rotating the shaft. A removable thrust collar 41 is arranged at the commutator end of the shaft and covered by a cap 43 forming a bearing for the collar. Air enters the housing 7 at the commutator end, passes over the chamber 13 and through passages 33 under the commutator 3, through the armature and over the chamber 21 to an outlet 35, fan blades 34 being arranged on the chamber 21. The commutator is protected from dust &c. by baffles 27, 31 on the bearing housing and the commutator support respectively. Another stream of air enters by openings 37 and passes over the field-magnets to the outlet 35; a radial baffle 38 protects the commutator from this stream.
