Latches, sliding; fastenings operated mechanically from a distance. - Relates to locking- apparatus for hinged members such as the intermediate guides 5 used with roller shutters. The guide 5 is locked in the vertical position by two gravity-operated bolts 6 carried on a slide 7 and engaging holes 14 in a floor-plate 15, which has a stop 15<a> to limit the forward swing of the guide. To lift the guide, a rope 11 is pulled, thus raising, the slide 7 until it contacts with a stop 16, whereupon the bolts will be fully withdrawn and the guide will be swung out of the vertical and may be raised to any desired position. To prevent accidental projection of the bolts in the event of the rope slackening, a trip plate 17 pivoted to the guide at 19 is arranged to swing under gravity beneath the end of the guide, Fig. - 4. When the guide is lowered, a projection 2C on the floor-plate swings back the trip plate, thus the, bolts to shoot.
