Abstract

268,141. Leeson, R. W. April 10, 1926. Mudguards; lateral-splash guards.-A lateralsplash guard for vehicle wheels comprises a rigid shield 5, a reinforcing strip 6 and a resilient sheet 4 clamped between the shield and strip with its lower end parallel with and contiguous with the road surface, the edges of the sheet preferably extending all around the shield. A cylindrical member 8 secured adjacent the centre of the shield is rotatably mounted on anti-friction bearings 12 on a spindle 14 on the wheel hub, live axle or wheel, stays attached to the shield 5 or strip 6 being provided to prevent rotation of the guard relatively to the wheel. In the case of a steering wheel of a motor vehicle, a stay passing around to the inner side of the wheel is secured to the steering arm, and in the case of a, rear wheel, the guard is preferably shaped as shown in dotted lines in Fig..1 and a stay is connected to a fixed part of the vehicle. When applied to the wheels of motor-cycles, a shield is provided at each side of the wheel, the two shields being connected by an integral inverted U-shaped portion so as substantially to envelop the whole of the wheel. This form of guard may also be applied to motor-cars.
