Carriage-shift mechanism; paper-carriages; shift-key actions. - In type-lever machines in which adjustment of the platen with reference to the printing plane is effected by adjusting the carriage-shift frame, the shift-key devices and in some cases the locking-devices and counterbalancing-spring also are adjustable with the carriage-shift frame as a unit. In the portable machine shown in Fig. 1, a carriage-shift frame consisting of pairs of rocking arms 8, 20 pivoted to the bed 7, 19 of the carriage 1 is supported by two side plates 44 each having ears 24 formed on a cross-piece 22, and a screw 45, the ears and screws engaging inclined slots 23, 46 in the framework A. A rocking frame 14, mounted on a shaft 48 connecting the side plates 44, is provided with shift keys 16 and is connected by a link 12 to a depending part 10 of one of the arms 8. The arms 8 are secured to a shaft 9 provided with adjustable cones 27, Fig, 5, engaging sleeves 28 on the cross-pieces 22, and the arms 20 rock on screws 21 threaded into sleeves 25 on the side plates. The side pieces are secured by means of screws 26, 29 which pass through short slots in the framework and are threaded into the sleeves 25, 28. On releasing the screws 26, 29 the side plates can be moved backwards or forwards to adjust the platen with reference to the printing plane, the carriage-shift frame and shift keys moving with the platen as a unit. The printing plane is determined by a stop E in the path of the type-levers C. For fine adjustment there may be provided screws 32, Fig. 3, passing through ears 31 in the framework A and threaded into ears 30 on the side plates 44; or the screws may be threaded into the ears 24. The side plates are provided with screws 37, 38 co-operating with ears on the members 19 to limit the shift movements. Counterbalancing springs 62 are connected to the arms 8 and the cross-pieces 22 of the side plates 44. Key locks.-One of the side plates 44, Fig. 1, is provided with a pin 49 co-operating with the shift-lock key 17. The rocking frame 14 and the shift-lock key may be connected to a rocking hook and a rocking arm which are mounted on the side plates 44 and are adapted to lock the carriage-shift frame in the normal and shift positions respectively.
