Paper carriages and supports; car- .riage-shift mechanism.-Relates to the mounting of the carriage-shift frame and the platen particularly in portable machines, and comprises means for adjusting these members to obtain uniform aligned type-impressions along the entire printing line. (1) The carriage-shift frame comprises side plates 35, 36, a rear plate 33, and carriage-rails 29, 30, and is mounted on pairs 37, 38 and 39, 40 of rocking arms pivoted at the rear on slides 43, 44 which are adjustable normally 'to the printing plane, this being determined by a stop ring 52 in the path of the type-levers 11. The arms 39, 40 are connected by a cross-bar 41 which is trunnioned on screws 42 on the slides, and the arms 37, 38 are pivoted on hubs 69 on the slides. The slides are mounted in recesses 45 in the framework 46 and are adjusted by screws 50 threaded into lugs 51 on the slides and grooved to engage, lugs 48 on the framework. The slides are secured by screws 53, The shift movements are limited by screws 75 in the path of the arms 39, 40. The arms 39, 40 have studs 54, 55 which enter notches 56 in the plates 35, 36 and are retained by hooks 58 adjustably secured to the plates by screws 59 passing through inclined slots 60 in the plates. The stud 56 bears on the top of its notch, and the stud 54 bears on a bar 61 pivoted to the plate 35 and adjustable by a screw 62 for the purpose of setting the carriage-rails 29, 30 parallel to the base of the machine. The bar 61 is secured by a screw 64 passing through a slot 65. To prevent play of the carriage-shift frame and to absorb shock when the carriageis arrested bv the escapement mechanism 14b or the margin devices 33<b>, the hubs 69 are provided with headed screws 67, 70 abutting on the plates 35, 36. The screw 67 is secured by a nut 68 and is accessible through a slot 68a for adjustment. (2) For setting the platen 10 parallel to the carriage-rails 29, 30 the platen spindle 17 is mounted at one end in a bearing 26 formed in a lever 18 which is pivoted at 19 to the carriage end-plate 16 and is formed with an arm 25 engaging a slot in an adjusting- slide 20. The slide is mounted in lugs 21 on the end-plate and is moved and secured by a screw 23 passing through a slot 22. To provide for slight subordinate adjustment of the platen, the end-plates 16 are adjustably secured to the base 15 by screws passing through slots in lugs 16<a>. Shift-ke,y actions. - Shift-key levers 72 have arms 76 engaging the studs 54, 55 on the supporting-arms 39, 40 of the carriage-shift frame. Returning-springs 73 normally hold lugs 74 on the shift-key levers in contact with the framework 46.
