489,393. Typewriters &c. GRIFFITH, R. G. Feb. 25, 1937, No. 5693. [Class 100 (iv)] Letter-spacing mechanism; paper-carriage8.- The type-carriage or the paper-carriage of a page-printing telegraph or a power-operated typewriter is mounted in a support constantly urged in letter-spacing direction by a resilient device which serves to cushion the carriage at the end of the return-movement. The apparatus shown in the Figure comprises, as described in Specification 441,090, a typedrum 1 mounted in a carriage 50 which can slide for letter-spacing on square shafts 44, 48 forming part of a support 54 which is rocked about pivots 55a, 55b to swing the type-drum for impression. The pivot 55b is now arranged to slide in one end-plate of the support 54 and is provided with a spring 55b which normally holds a shoulder 55c on the pivot 55a in contact with an arm 14. The pivots 55b is threaded into an arm 15 and can be turned to adjust the spring. When the rack 61 is raised out of engagement with a feed-pinion 60 on the carriage, a spring drum 26 returns the carriage and the impact of the carriage on the support 54 is cushioned by the spring 16. A dashpot may be arranged between the carriage and the support or the arm 15. As applied to machines having a movable platen, the platen-carriage runs on rails or rollers on a spring-cushioned support similar to the support 54.
