- Specification of Letters Patent.
raam-tee taai. i. rolo.
Application filed April 3, 1908. Serial No. 424.958.
To all whom it vmay concern.'
Be 1t known that l, Tenues Evrnn'r'ri Forni, a citizen of the United States, resid' I side view of same mounted on a typewriter,
` improved means in combination With av type- 'pulley and thumb turn and 'curved plate 11 is provided with lugs 12 scale of the typewriter.
ino; at Frankford, in the county of Philadelphia, State of Pe..nsylvania, have invented anew and usetul Lineograpln of, which the following is a specification. My invention relates to -imprmfements in lineographs. 1
The object of my invention is to provide writer for supporting the copy to be transcribed, and forindicating' the line and point on the line to lwhich the copying has progressed,
Referring' to the draivfng's:-Figure 1 is a front elevation ot' my device. Fig. .2 is a a portion only ot' thetypewrlter being shown. Fig. 3 is a detail in vertical Ysection ot the associated mechanism.
Similar numerals. refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The usual "typewriter platen indicated at 4. The lneopgraph roller is indicated at 5. Roller 5 is journaled in theside plates t3, C, ot' the lineograph frame. This trame is removatly s-cured to the top ot' the typewriter carriage in any suitable way, as for example. the hook 7 is secured beneath the nut 9, or other suitable projection., while the lug' 9 adapted to rest on nut l0. The
which have a movable or flexible engagement with the side platesG, 6, by the bolts 13 projecting' through slots 14 in said lues 12. Upon plate 11 are mounted the pressure rollers 15. rlhe fiat springslG-are secured to the cross plate 17 by the rivets 18; there being' two ot suoli springs. 'lhese springs are adapted to press against the `uiiderside of plate 11 to maintain a yielding` pressure of the rollers 15 against the roller 5. The front edge of plate 11 is lprovided with the usual scale 19 corresponding' to the usual The pointer' 2O is slidably seated between the plate 17 and the plate 21 and has a horizontil movement therebetween. lhe yoke '22 is slidably mounted on the horizontal .bar Q3 bolted to the. side plate (5. and is provided l with' the downwardly extending' slot 24.
then moved rl`his slot adapted to engage with the xed shaft fr of the escapement wheel 2G of. the typewriter. @perative relationship is .esl tablished between pointer member 20 and yoke member 22 by the fine piano Wires 27 and 28 runningl over the pulleys 29 and 30; it being noted that each wire runs overboth pulleys 30 to maintain the proper directional relation. These Wires are preferably guided through the tubes 31 and 552 to maintain them in a curve corresponding to the inner curve of plate 6, thaty is, to prevent them .from interfering with free access to the typewriter platen roller 4.
Ori-'shaft 33 of roller 5 is mounted the pulley 34, while on the shaft '35 of platen roller 4 is mounted the pulley 36, the thumb turn 3,7.and the cone 38. The cone 38 is Yrigid With shaft 35, While the thumb turn 37 has a clutch engagementy therewith normally maintained by the spring' 39 operating between pulley 36 and thumb turn 37, the positive rotative relationship between 36 and 37 'is maintained by the pins 40 rigid With one member and movably engaging \vith\ apertures in the other member, to permit of manila] ope-ration to secure arbitrary independent movement between roller platen 4 and4 roller 5. The pulleys 34 and 36 are connected by the. belt 41.
The operation of my device is as folloivszfThe Isheet to be copied is inserted in the direction of the arrow, that'is, to the rear of the roller, between 'the plate 11 and the roller 5, see Fig. 2. 'llfhevline to be copied is brought above the margin of the scale plate 19 in the usual way. The carriage is to bring the pointer 20 into the position to indicate the first letter of the line to be copied. It will thus be seen thatfwith each step' of the movable carriage 42, upon which the lineograph rolleris mounted, the position ot the yoke 22, being secured to the stationary shaft 25 of the typewriter, will.
change step by step with respect to said easriage and the position of the pointer 20 will," be vchanged correspondingly on the scale plate 19. At the end ol the line the carriage of the typewriter is brought baclr to the initial position and the roller platen 4 is moved one point' forwardly vin the usual way. Ro tative motion of roller platen 4 is communicated through tbe'belt 4 and pulleysl 34 and v 8G, to roller 5, which will bev similarly ad-I lot vanced. it is to be understood that the roll- 5- ers4 and 5 are of corresponding diametenthat is, have' corresponding peripheral dimensions. is the carriage is brought b'acl; to v the initial posit/ion it is also obvious that the pointer 20 will similarly be brought back to initial position with respect to scale late 19. Thus the operation is repeated until the co ing of the sheet is completed.
hat I claim is f' 1. In combination with a typewriter, having a. platen roller and a movable carriage supporting the same, a lineoofraph com-pris ing a copy holder supported by said movable carriage, and a pointer for step by step y indicationon the copy to be transcribed of the point to which the transcribing has advanced, said pointer adapted to be held in a fixed position irrespective of the movement of the carriage and copy holder.
2. In combination with a typewriter, having a platen roller and a movable carriage supporting the same, a lineograph comprising a copy holder supported by said movable carriage, having a rotating element, `means for securing corresponding movement between the copy-holder and the said platen' roller, and a vpointer for step by step indication on the copy to be transcribed of the point to which the transcribing has advanced, said pointer adapted to be held in a fixed position irrespective of the movement of the carriage and copy holder.
3. In combination with a typewriter, having. a platen roller and a movable carriage supportingthe same, a lineo raph compris` ing a"copy holder supporte by said movable carriage, a pointer slidably mounted in said copy holder and means for securing relative movement between the copy holder and pointer corresponding to the travel of the carriage. l y' Il. In combination'with a typewriter, having a platen roller and a movable carriage supporting the same, a lineograph. comprising a copy holder, comprising a framework mounted on the movable carria e and movable therewith, va pointer 'slida ly mounted. in the copy holder framework near the up-r per part thereof, a yoke slidably mounted ein@l rable clutch between onelrollerand pu lineograph device,
in the copy holdery framework at the lower part thereof, said yoke havin engagement vwith a fixed portion of the statlonary framework of the machine, and flexible means for maintainin the lpointer in the same relative position with the yoke, irrespective of the movement of the copy holder framework.
5. In combination with a typewriter, hav- I ing a movable carriage and a platen roller supported thereon, a copy holder mounted on and movable with the carriage, and having l holder.
6. In combination with atypewriter, havhotldin the cop to` be transcribed, means for in icatingtlie line lto vwhich the transcribing hasxpgoffressed, comprising-a lineograph roller land .a cooperating guide, belt and pulley means for normally securing vthe equal movement of both rollers, and a scip e for vpermitting the arbitrary movement ol one roller independently ofthe other.:
7. In combination with a typewriter, g A comprising means .for holdin the cop' to be transcribed, meansfor in icating t e line to which the transcribing has progressed, apointer adapted to have relative travel along the line to indicate thepoint to which thetranscribing has progressed and means for establishing a relative movement between the pointer and the typewriter carriage.
