Be it known that I, GUsTAvn O. llnennnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the paper feeding and guiding mechanism of typewriting machines. In the Royal Standard machine the paper is fed around the platen by a group of feed rolls which can be released when it is desired to insert or adjust paper upon the platen. There have also been provided combined pressure and feeding rolls which normally hold the paper against the top of the platen after it has passed the printing point. These upper pressure rolls may be moved from their normal or working position on top of the platen to a position in the rear of the platen.
' It has also been proposed to provide upper rolls which are. not only capable :ofsuch movement to the rear of the platen, but also have an independent movement from their position in contact with the platen to a position aconsiderable distance in front of the platen .so that there is a clear space between these pressure rolls and the platen sufiicient to permit the paper passing around the platen to pass upwardly between the rolls and the platen without any manipulation thereof. When the forwardly movable rolls are then returned to workin position they will press the paper against t e platen above the printing point.
v The present invention is an improvement on preceding constructions and provides a bail carrying the. pressure rolls which has side pieces thatare pivoted tothe usual forwardly extending side arms at points above the plane of the pressure rolls. These pressure rolls are held against the platen by the usual sprin s which hold the side arms in position, an when it is desired to move the pressure rolls to inoperative position, the side arms are liftedslightly and the roll carrging bail will swing downward and forby the force of gravity to a position where pa r fed up around the front of the platen w l as between the. platen and the pressure ro without any manipulation.
"Further objects of the invention will be apparent from the following detailed description and the appended claims. In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of portions of a typewriting machine taken from the right side thereof and disclosing the invention with the pressure rolls inoperative position. Figure 2 is a similar view with the pres sure rolls in inoperative position.

The drawings illustrate portions of a typewriting machine suflicie-nt to disclose the invention.
The invention comprises a shift rail or frame A, carriage side plates B, a platen C mounted therein, the paper apron D, the usual rearwardly swinging paper table E pivoted at e to the side plates of the carriage and held in position by aspring c, all of which parts are illustrated as being of the construction usually employed in the Royal Standard machine, but which, so far as the invention is concerned, may be of any desired type. There is also shown the bar F connecting the side plates B of the carriage and the margin stop bar G.
There is also illustrated the usual overhead bail frame comprising side arms L, L, joined together by a transverse rod M and :pivoted to the carriage side plates at Z. This frame may occupy the position shown in Figures 1 and 2, or may be swung to the rear of the paper table asindicated in dotted lines in Figure 2 which show merely a portion of the side arm L. One or both of the arms L, L- is provided with a downward extension T between which and the side framesB of the carriage there is normally a clearance a: which permits the springs N to exert the desired pressure upon the pressure rolls;
When it is desired to release the pressure rolls, the side arms L, L are lifted slightly and the roll carrying bail swings about the pivots 0 under the force of gravity to the position shown in Figure 2. It may be noted that when the bail is moved to the inoperative position of Figure 2 the extensions T come in contact with the side frames of the carriage and prevent excessive downward movement. The length of the arms L, L and plates 0 are so proportioned that when the roll carrying bail is in this inoperative position paper may pass around the front. of the platen and upwardly between the rolls S and the platen without any manipulation.
Each plate 0 is provided with a finger piece W and when it is desired to move the ail from the Figure 2 position to that of Figure 1, it is swung by one or both of these-finger ieces, the frame L, L being slightly lifted? I In the modification shown in Figure 4, all parts are as above described except that there is provided a spring V which nor mally holds the swinging bail with the lips R in engagement with the side arms L of the frame. The bail can at any time be moved to inoperative position by means of the finger pieces IV.
In the modification shown in Figure 5 all parts are as above described, except there is provided a spring V which normally holds the swinging bail in inoperative position with the lips R in engagement with the stops on the side of the arm L of the frame. The bail can, at any time, be moved to operative'position by means of the'finger piece W.
There is provided bythis invention a swinging auxiliary roll carryin bail pivoted in the front end of the side arms of the main bail or frame but at points above the lane of the rolls. The rolls are held against the platen by the. springs which govern the position of the main bail. A
minimum of parts is therefore obtained and the device is simple to manufacture and use although fully efiicient. Obviously detail changes may be made without in any manner departing from the spirit of the invent-ion which is to be regarded as limited only by the scope of the appended claims.
I claim as my invention.
1. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen carriage, a movable frame mounted therein to move rearwardly from operative position, and a roll car ing bail connected to said frame above t 0 plane of the rolls and movable to a position 'in front of the platen.
2. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen carriage, a movable frame mounted therein to move rearwardly from operative position, and a. roll carrying bail pivotally connected to the front ends of said frame above the plane of the rolls and swinging to a position a considerable distance in hem of the platen.
3. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen carriage, a rearwardly movable frame comprising side arms mounted therein, and a roll carrying bail comprising side plates pivoted near their upper front corners to the front ends of said side arms and swinging to a position a considerable distance in front of the platen.
4;. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen carriage, "a rearwardly movable frame mounted therein, springs for holding it in operative position, and a roll carrying bail comprisin side plates pivotally mounted near the i ront ends of said frame and pressed against the platen by said springs, said bail swinging when released from said platen to a position considerably in front of the same.
5. In a typewriting machine, thebombination of a platen carriage, a rearwardly movable frame mounted therein, plates hinged at their upper sides to the front ends of the frame, a roll carrying rod mounted in the lower rear portion of said plates, and rolls carried by said rod and when in operative position bearing 'upon the top of the platen, the rod and plates swinging to a position in front of the laten when released from engagement therem.
6. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen carriage, a rock shaft frame comprising side arms ivoted to said carriage and a roll carrying ail depending from the side arms of the rock shaft frame.
