While I show the invention as applied more particularly to a typewriting machine in which the carriage and platen are folded forward, it will be understood that the invention may be applied to other forms of machines. The frame 10 has a rear member 11 and side members 12, and supported between the side members 12 are transversely extending rods 13. As shown there are-three rods arranged in parallel relation and each rod is adapted to support a bank or set of keylevers 14. These key-levers'14' are suspended from the rods 13 and at one end have the usual operatingkey and adjacent to the pivot may be held bya spring 15 to a transversely extending plate 15 tending normally to force the outer end of the key-levers upward. Each key-lever at its inner end may be vconnected by a link 16 or otherwise to 'a typdbar (not shown). and each key-lever is adapted toengage a part 17 of a universal bar 18. The rod 27 is held at its outer ends in arms 29, which latter are held to a rod or shaft 30, and these arms are adapted to be operated by suitable platen-shift mechanism (not shown), to adapt the rocking frame to be elevated.
The rod 27 is connected at its ends to vercally movable .posts or slides (not shown) which are movably held at their upper ends in hearings or. guides 31, and each 0st or slide is secured to a barE32. These ars 32 have similar. bars (not shown) pivoted thereto, at 33, and to these latter bars, is held a carriage bed 34 along which the can riage 35 is adapted to travel in the usual way, said carriage being provided with a 'pact when not in use for transportation or suitable platen 36 about which the work sheet is adapted to be held. The carriage 35 and carriage bed 34 is adapted to be folded over and forward with the pins 33 as a pivot so that the-platen 36 will rest upon the forward part of the frame of the machine and so as to substantially overhang the keyboard of the machine and in such a way as to reduce the cubical contents 7 5 of the machine to make the same morefcom-q other purposes. The parts thus far described are not claimed specifically herein and may be of any suitable or preferred construction.
A bracket 37 has a transversely extending arm 38 in which are openings 39. Screws 40 have their bodies passing through said openings and have their threaded portions engaging threaded apertures in the carriage bed so as to rigidly hold the bracket 37 to the bed. This bracket has a forwardly extending arm 41 which connects with an integral and horizontally arranged arm 42 which extends substantially parallel to the arm 38 but is slightly higher than said latter arm. The arm 42 of the bracket 37 has a slot 43 extending lengthwise thereof, and adapted to enter said slot is a roller 44 caras a projecting part from thelarm. 46 of a ribbon vibrator 47. The vibrator arm 46 is vertically arranged and has a part bent or folded upon itself, as at 48, so that the pin may be rigidly 'held therein. The vibrator 47 has a horizontally extending arm 49. This arm 49 is enlarged at one end, as at 50, and is provided with a slot 51 through which the ribbon may be passed and'intersecting said slot is a short slot 52 by which the ribbon may be readily threadedinto the vibrator. The vertically extending arm of the ribbon vibrator terminates in a boss or part 53 which is pivoted by means of a screw 54 to an upwardly extending and integral curved arm 55 of the bracket 37. By this means the end 50 of the ribbon vibrator may be moved up and down with the screw 54 as a pivot to cause the ribbon to cover and uncover the printing point, and the vibrator guided by the slot 43 androller 44,

To operate the ribbon vibrator to permit difi'erent zones or fields of the ribbon to be presented to the printing point and to posi'' aively operate the ribbon vibrator in both directions to cover and uncover the prints ing' point or to permit the vibrator tore" main inactive in order that stencils made,.various' means may be employed As shown, an actuating memberfor' device is provided, and this member ispivoted by a screw 57 to a lug or projection 58 of the bracket 37, the said lug forming an extension of the horizontally arranged bracket arm 42. The actuating member 56 is sub-v stantially L-shaped in form and has a cam lever or member 59 pivoted thereto as by a screw 60, said lever 59 serving as an adjustable connection between the actuating mem ber and the vibrator. The screw 60,"wh-en the parts are in'their normal position and the ribbon below the printing point, is axially arranged with respect to the pin 45 of the ribbon vibrator. A roller 61 is held on the pin 45 under the. roller 44: and this roller is adapted to move between vertical walls 62 and 63 of the lever 59'. The Walls 62 and 63 may be inclined and are adapted to be adjusted in proper relation to the roller 61, and said walls form substantially a guide or raceway for th roller during the reciprccatory or swinging movement of the lever with the actuating member 56 as will be presently described. The actuating member 56 is adapted to be moved-inward and outward on its pivot screw 57 and in doing so will carry the lever 59 therewith. The lever or adjustable connection 59 is capable of a plurality of adjustments In one adjustment the walls 62 and 63 are sopositioned with respect to the pivot screw 57 that the actuating member with its lever may be moved without moving the ribbon vibrator. If the lever is moved to the position shown in Figs. 4:, 5 and 7, the walls of the lever become cam' surfaces so that by vibrating or swinging the member 56 on its pivot to carry the levertherewith, the said walls will force the roll 61 inward and thereby throw the end-50 of the vibrator with the ribbon upward, and on the return of the member 56 will bring the ribbon held by the vibrator again below the printing point to its normal position, thus positively moving the vibrator in both directions. The vibrator with the rolls 4:4 and 61 is thus held in its movement'between the walls 62 and 63 of the lever or adjustable connection 59 and the slot 43 of the bracket, the walls 62 and 63 being arranged at an angle with respect to the guiding slot 43 of the bracket.
The actuating member or lever 56 is provided with a vertical portion 6 1' which is formed by cutting away a part of said actuating member to provide a slot 65 through" which the end of the lever 59 may be passed. The lever 59 has a finger portion 66 on the outslde of the vertical part 64 of the actuating member 56 and is adapted to engage cam ortions 67 of the part 64: so as to hold said ever 59 in any one of its adjustments. The lever 59 may be of spring steel tending normally to frictionally engage the under surface of the cam portion 67 of the parts 64 and is provided with an enlarged part 68 in which is an opening 69 to adapt any one of a plurality of disks 70 to be readily seen through said opening according to the position of said lever. There are three brator in this case will be moved to present the black portion of the ribbon to the printing point, and when moved over the disk R, a greater movement will be given to the ribbon owing to the greater inclination of the walls 62 and 63 and consequently the cam action thereof. This will present the red portion of the ribbon to the printing point, and when the lever is moved so that the letter S is seen through the opening 69 the walls 62 and 63 will be so positioned with respect to the pivot screw 57 that the said actuating member 56 with its lever or adjustable part may be moved without operating thevibrator and consequently the ribbon will remain inactive and below the printing point to adapt stencils to be made.
The actuating member 56 is provided with a lug 71 and this lug is provided with an opening in which is fastened one end of a spring 72. The spring 72 has its other end fastened to a lug 73 forming a part of the horizontal bracket arm 42. said spring tending normally to force the actuating member 56 to its normal position and to prevent the ribbon vibrator and actuating member from becoming displaced when the carriage and bed are moved to a folded or compact position. The bracket 37 is provided with a forwardly extending arm 74 which is adapted to be engaged by a stop or part 75 carried by the actuating member 56 and which part by engagement with the arm 74 determines the normal position of the .actua'ting member, the said part 75 being may be adjustably and rigidly held to the transverse bar 28 of the rocking frame 25. The device 76 has a bendable arm 80 located at one side of the plate portion 77 and which projects from one end and liesjsubstantially parallel to said portion. A pin 80 extends upwardly from the outer end of the arm 80 and is adapted to enter a slot-81 located in 130* the arm= 82 of the actuating member 56. It will be evident that when the bar 28 is rocked on the depression of any one of the key-levers through the universal bar 18 that such movement will: by reason of the engagement of the pin 80 with the actuating member '56 rock the latter onits pivot and through. said actuating member move its le Ver 59 and thereby cause the several movementslof the ribbon vibrator as already ex plained. It will be further evident that the arm 80 may be bent forward and backward and thereby make the pin 80 register properly with the slot irrespective of any arrangement' of the location of the rocker bar 28 in' relation to the carriage bed plate, it being understood that the pin 80* may be ment and all that is necessary to properly j position the parts in assembling the machine is to adjust and then fix the device 76 in its proper position.
Instead of forming the vibrator with a single slot for the ribbon, the horizontally arranged arm may have a substantially U- shaped end- 82 This end has two upright portions or arms 83 and 84 in each of which is a vertical slot These slots are intersected by short slots through which the ribbon may be threaded. The arms 83 and 84:
are located on opposite sides of the printingv point and support the ribbon at two points instead of one as in Figs. 1 and 2.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that :simple and eflicient mechanism is provided which is adapted to move a ribbon to cover and uncover the printing point and'which is adapted to permit the machine to be used. for making stencils; that the ribbon vibrator is positivelyheld and guided and is positively moved to carry the ribbon both over the printing point and away therefrom; that simple and etticient means is provided wherebyvarious throws of the ribbon may be obtained; and that'simple and efiicient mechanism is provided whichunay be readily made and assembled and which is particularly adapted for machines in which the carriage is foldable into compact relation to another part of the machine.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1 1. In a typewriting machine, the combinationof a support, a bracket held to said ing a sliding connection between the lever and the vibrator, a rocking bar, and an adjustabled'evice mounted on the rocking bar and having a pin-and-slot connection with the actuating member.
2. In a typ'ewritingmachine, the combination ofa support a bracket held to said support, a ribbon vibrator pivotally held to said bracket, an actuating member movably held to the bracket, a lever'pivotally held to the actuating member to adapt said-lever to be adjusted thereon, means forming a sliding connection between the lever and the vibrator, a rocking bar, and a device mount- 'ed on the rocking bar and having a connec tionwith the actuating member.
3. In a "typewriting machine, the combi-' nation of a support, a bracket held to said support, a ribbon vibrator pivotally held to said bracket, an actuating member pivotally" held to the bracket, a member pivotally held to the actuating member -to adapt the same to be adjusted thereon to difierent positions, means forming a connection between the second member and the vibrator, and means for operating the actuating member.
4. In a typewriting machine, the "combination of a bracket, a ribbon vibrator pivotally held to said bracket, an actuating mem- -ber pivotally-held to the bracket, a second member movable with the first-mentioned member and adjustable relatively thereto and having a connection with the vibrator to operate the same, and means having a' pin-and-slot connection with the actuating .member to operate the same.
5: In a typeivriting'machinm'the combination of a ribbon vibrator, apivotally held actuating member, an adjustable member mounted on said actuating member and forming a continuous connection between saidv vibrator and the actuating member,
means for moving the actuating member, and means for adjusting the adjustable member whereby the vibrator maybe given difierent throws or permitted to remain inactive.
6. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon vibrator, a pivotally held actuating member movable trans versely of the vibrator, an adjustable member plvotally mounted on said actuating member and formmga dlrect connection between said vibrator and the actuating member, and means for moving the actuating member whereby the vibrator may be given different throws. 4
7. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon vibrator, a movable actuating member, and an adjustable lever mounted on the actuating member and forming, a directsliding connection between the acwatingv member and the vibrator transversely of the plane of movement of said vibrator and adapted when given different adjustments to cause the vibrator to be given ditl'erent movements and to be positifiily moved to and from the printing point.. I
8. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon vibrator, a movable actuating member, and adjustable means having projecting substantially parallel walls forming a direct connection between the actuating member and the vibrator adapted when given different adjustments to cause the vibrator to be given different movements or to remain inactive.
9. Ina typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon vibrator, a normally stationary snpport,-and an actuating member held to saidsupport and having an adjustable and positive cam conn'ection with the vibratorl and adapted when the connection is adjusted to' cause the ribbon to be given different throws or-to remain inactive.
10. In-a-typeivriting machine, the combinationot a ribbon vibrator, a normally stationary support, and an actuating member held on said support and movable -trans versely of the plane of movement of the vibrator and having. an adjustable bodily movable and direct'sliding connection with the vibrator at all times mounted thereon and adapted 'When the connection is adjusted to cause the ribbon to be given difl'erf nt throws and to be positively moved to finctfrom the printing point. ll 11'. In a typ'ewriting machine, the combil' ation ofa ribbon vibrator, a normally staionary support and a movable actuating member mounted on the support and having a a pivotally held and direct cam-like sliding connection with the vibrator and adapted when the connection is adjusted on its pivot to cause the ribbon to be given different throws or to remain inactive.
f 12. Ina typevvriting machine, the combination of a ribbon vibrator, a movable memer, a lever pivoted to and carried wholly by said member and having a sliding connection With the vibrator, and means for operating said member.
13. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a bracket having a slot, a vibrator pivotally held to said bracket and having a part thereof guided in said slot, a member having a sliding connection With the part of the vibrator passing through the slot of the bracket and so arranged with respect to said slot as to move transversely of the slot and to loosely confine a part of the vibrator, and means for actuating said member.
-14; In. a typewriting machine, a movable ribbon vibrator, and a lever movable to (iii iterent positions with respect to the vibrator and ln'wing walls for engagement with a part of the vibrator and adapted to impart different throws to the vibrator or to permit it to remain inactive, and means for moving the lever bodily.
15. In a typewriting machine, a movable 1'bbon vibrator, a normally stationary support, and a horizontally adjustable and bedily mo able member pivotally held to said support and directly connected to said vibrator at all times and adapted to impart diiierent throws to the vibrator and to positively move the ribbon to and from the printing point.
16. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a support having a slot, a ribbon vibrator pivotally held to the support and provided with a part projecting through the slot, an adjustable lever adapted to engage the projecting part of the vibrator under the slot of the support and adapted to permit the vibrator to be moved to different distances or to permit the vibrator to remain inactive according to its adjustment, and means for reciprocating the lever.
17. In a typmvriting machine, the combination of a supporthaving a slot, a ribbon vibrator pivotally hold to the support and provided with a part projecting through the slot, a member pivotally held to the bracket, a lever pivoted to the bracket and adapted to engage the projecting part of the vibrator under the slot of the support, said lever being so arranged with respect to the slot of the bracket as to move transversely of said slot and adapted to permit the vibrator to be moved to different distances or the vibrator to remain inactive, and means for bodily moving the lever.
18. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a bracket having a slot, a vibrator pivotally held to the bracket and provided with a part projecting through the slot, an adjustable lever adapted to engage the same projecting part of the vibrator under the slot of the bracket and so arranged with respect to said slot as will permit the vibrator to be moved to different distances or the vibrator to remain inactive, an actuating and supporting member for the lever, key-operatcd levers, and means including a pin-andslot connection between the key-operated levers and the lever actuating member.
19. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a support. a bracket held to said support, a ribbon vibrator pivotally held to the bracket. an actuating member pivotally held to the bracket, a lever pivotally held to the member, means for holding the lever in various positions on the actuating member, means forming a sliding connection between the actuating member and the ribbon vibrator, said means being adjustable to cause the vibrator to remain inactivein one position and to have difierent throws according to the other positions of said lever, and means for movingthe actuating member.
20. In a typewritingmachine, the combi-. nation of a support,- a bracket held to said support and provided with a" slot, anactuat bar and having a positive and separable con' nection with the actuating member to positively move the same in opposite directions,

In a typewriting machine, a support, a carriage adapted to travel along said support and foldable forward with the support into compact relation to another part of the machine to occupy less space than when in use, a ribbon vibrator pivotally held to the support, means a part of which is foldable with the support and carriage for moving the vibrator, key-operated levers, and means cooperating with said levers and positively connected to and separable from the remainder of the vibrator moving means-and adapted to operate the latter when the levers are operated and only when the carriage is in its normal working position.

In a typewriting machine, a support, a carriage adapted to travel along said support and movable with the support into compact relation to another part of the machine, two movable members partaking of the compact movement of the carriage and support, means for moving the members relatively to each other, a ribbon vibrator operatively connected to the members, key-operated levers and a positive and separable connection between the members and said levers.
32. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon vibrator, means for moving the vibrator, and a device having a bendable arm having a pin adapted to engage a part of the vibrator moving means to 0perate the latter.-
3 In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon vibrator means for moving the vibrator havin a slot, and an adjustably held rocking device having a bendable part provided with a pin adapted to engage the slot of the vibrator moving means to operate the latter.
