Regulating compression; valves, arrangement of.-In the steam generator described in the parent Specification, the steam circulation pump and the feed pump are driven by the same engine, the delivery of the pumps being regulated by varying the speed of the engine. The delivery of the feed pump 1, Fig. 2, driven with the steam circulation pump 2 by an engine 3 is independently controlled by a regulating valve 7 in a feed return pipe 6, or by varying the stroke of the pump. Separately driven auxiliary pumps are used for starting the generation of steam and for maintaining the generation when the main engines are not running: The delivery of the pumps may be controlled from the valve gear of the main engine. The steam circulation pump may be double-acting and may have a piston valve 32, Fig. 6, with little or negative lap, controlling the admission and discharge of steam. Steam from the inlet port 33 passes around the piston valve to the cylinder ports 31a, 30<a> in turn. Steam delivered from the cylinder through the lower port 31a passes through the piston valve to the outlet port 34. A cooling coil 38 connected to the cylinder and valve casing supplies condensed steam for lubricating purposes. The phase displacement of the piston valve is varied by moving axially a helically grooved sleeve 41 in the eccentric 42.
