Abstract
1,111,672. Revolving cylinder engines. CONSERVATOIRE NATIONAL DES ARTS ET METIERS and H. GIRERD. May 12, 1965 [May 15, 1964], No. 19946/65. Headings F1A, F1B and F1M. In an engine with a piston and cylinder rotating in a stationary casing 3, the lower part of the piston is formed as a cam curve which acts upon stationary rollers 4 to produce rotation of the piston as it reciprocates a projection 9 on the piston engaging a groove 10 of the cylinder to cause the cylinder to rotate. A gear wheel 20 on the cylinder rotates the output shaft through gear wheel 21. The engine may be an I-C. engine or one driven by air, steam or hydraulic fluid. In an apposed piston I-C. engine, Fig. 2 ports in the cylinder control admission of air to a compression space 30 below the piston, transfer of the charge to the combustion chamber 14 between the pistons, and exhaust ports which are inclined so that the escaping exhaust produces a force on the piston assisting its rotation. The space 24 between the piston and a stationary plunger 6 may form a compressor space with inlet and outlet passages 23a, 23b controlled by ports 25 in the cylinder 2. Diaphragm pumps 26a, 26b for lubricating oil and fuel are actuated by the pressure in the passages 23a, 23b. In a modification Fig. 4 (not shown), separate combustion chambers 14a, 14b, are formed at the remote ends of the pistons 1 and cooling fluid is drawn through passages 36 in the cylinder by centrifugal forces. In a double-acting engine Fig. 5 (not shown) a combustion chamber 14 is provided between the opposed pistons 1 along with separate combustion chambers 14a at their opposite ends. In an engine with a hydraulic power take-off, Fig. 6, the piston and cylinder 1, 2, have enlarged portions 81, 60, forming a charge pump space 80, the wall 67 forming a rotary valve controlling inlet and outlet ports 98, 95. The charge is drawn into the pump through passages 85 running through the cylinder based cooling fins. A cam member 57 on the piston engages rollers 52 on these radial shafts 49. . 51, Fig. 7, to produce rotation and reciprocation of the piston, the member 57 having a hexagonal cross-section sliding in a similar recess in an extension 59 of cylinder 2 so that the cylinder rotates with the piston. The member 59 is geared to gear wheels 53 on the shafts 49.. 51. The piston 1 actuates the plunger 114 of a hydraulic pump which receives liquid through port 128 and passage 122 and delivers it through passage 123 and port 132 to a hydraulic motor. The delivery of the hydraulic pump is controlled by adjustment of a sliding cylinder 113 which is controlled manually or automatically in dependence upon the pump delivery pressure. Fuel and lubricating oil are delivered by plungers 141, Fig. 7 in the shafts 50, 51, actuated by the fluctuating pressure in the hydraulic circuit 148.
