Abstract
266,862. Smith, F.B. Jan. 15, 1926. Variably-applied weight apparatus.-In weighing-apparatus an arc-shaped counterpoise is attached by reverse flexible bands to a straight weigh-lever and has connected with it a second lever also attached by reverse flexible bands to an arc-shaped pivot, there being means for tensioning the bands in each case. The lever a, d, pivoted at b and having the load applied at c has the counter-poise e attached to it by flexible bands which are fastened to the counter-poise at f<1> and g<1> and after passing round the arc of the poise are attached to the lever at f and g respectively. The point g is on a member h which may be adjusted by a screw k relatively to the lever d to tension the bands. Pivoted by a reverse knife-edge at l to a vertical rod rigid with the poise e is a second lever m similarly attached by bands to a fixed pivot n. The arrangement is such that levers d and m are always parallel and the pointer o attached to the weigh lever moves equal amounts for equal increases of load. In modifications, (1) the arcs of members e and n are parallel, the member n not being fixed but being attached by a flexible link to a fixed member; (2) the weigh lever carries a fixed counterpoise and the load is applied to an underslung lever parallel to the weigh lever.
