Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for.-In a centrifugal seal for a turbine or other shaft the liquid. preferably mercury, is supplied to the seal from a pump, or a tank supplied by a pump, under such pressure that the necessary velocity is obtained independently of the rotation of the disc k on the shaft. The packing-groove i may be formed in a ring h secured in the casing g. The groove is supplied with liquid by pipes l, overflow taking place into an annular conduit m with an outlet n, preferably discharging into a tank. In order to empty the packing when the machine is stopped, means may be provided for connecting the supply pipe or the lower pipes l to the discharge pipe, or to the suction pipe of the pump. Preferably a float, or other safety device, is provided in the high-level tank, or in the supply pipe, for stopping the turbine if the liquid level falls.
