Abstract

147,600. Heimberger S÷hne, J. A,. Dec. 27, 1918, [Convention date]. Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for.-A centrifugal seal for rotating shafts, especially applicable for centrifugal and other rotary pumps for acids &c., comprises a bell c carried by a vertical pump shaft a and containing liquid, into which dips a flange j on a bell i carried by the cover b of the pump casing. The driving-shaft e may be secured to a head d attached to the bell c. The packing-chamber h is formed by a flange g in the bell c and a cover f attached to the bell. Liquid is poured into the bell through openings closed by screws o until it flows over the inner wall f<1> of the cover f into a cup m formed on the cover b. The cup m is drained by a passage n. During rotation the liquid lies in the space h and against the outer wall of the bell c, and forms a packing for the flange j. The packing liquid may be the acid &c. pumped, or another liquid, e.g. mercury. The seal may also be employed when the pump is driven from below, or in the case of a pump with an inclined or horizontal shaft.
