Abstract
265,959. Riedel Akt.-Ges., J. D. Feb. 12, 1926, [Convention date]. Adipic, alkyladipic, succinic and glutaric acids. -Adipic acid or its alkyl derivatives are produced by oxidizing cyclohexanol. cyclohexanone or their alkyl derivatives with nitric or chromic acid in the presence of oxygen transferrers, for example, metallic oxides like mercuric oxide, molybdenum pentoxide and vanadium pentoxide or the salts derived therefrom, such as mercuric sulphate or ammonium vanadate, thus permitting a lower temperature and smaller quantities of oxidizing agents to be used. Examples are given of the preparation of (1) adipic acid by pouring cyclohexanol into heated nitric acid containing a small quantity of ammonium vanadate. Succinic and glutaric acid may be recovered from the mother-lye; (2) #-methyladipic acid by adding p-methylcyclohexanol to heated nitric acid containing ammonium vanadate or molybdenum pentoxide; (3) #-methyladipic acid and acids of low molecular weight from p-methylcyclohexanol using mercuric oxide, and in the same way (4) adipic acid from cyclohexanol; (5) a - #-dimethyladipic acid by oxidizing hexahydro-1 : 3 : 5- xylenol as in example (2).
