Roasting furnaces ; cooling discharged materials. -A furnace of the multiple closed hearth rabble type for continuously drying and heating wet materials such as filter-press cakes or lithopone green cake comprises a drying chamber 19 and a number or superposed closed heating chambers or muffles 5, 6, 7 separated by fire flues 2, 3, 4 communicating with the combustion chamber 1. A blower 21 draws air or a neutral or reducing gas through a rotating tube 14 arranged centrally in the furnace and propels it when heated through the drying chamber 19 to the stack 24. The tube 14 carries rabbles 20, 9 which advance the slurry fed to a shelf 8 in the drying chamber by a filter press 19<a> progressively through the furnace for discharge into a quenching tank 25. The tank may be provided with a stirrer 26 and a levelcontrolling float 27. Part or all of the gases evolved by the heating of the slurry may be withdrawn through outlets 28, 29 leading to a stack. The stacks are fitted with dampers to enable a positive pressure to be maintained in the drying and heating chambers.
