Abstract

23,430. Lockyer, O. H. S., [Edwards, T.]. Oct. 10. Roasting and calcining furnaces; charges, agitating; discharging. -A tilting-furnace for roasting and calcining ores is provided with means for heating the working chamber intern all y, externally, or both. The charge is agitated by multiple rotary rabbles, which are introduced and withdrawn through the roof, and are provided with means for preventing fumes from escaping through the aperture in which the shaft rotates. Connexions with the rabble-driving shaft are arranged to operate the tilting-mechanism and a conveyer for removing the discharged material. As shown in Fig. 1, the working chamber 47 and flues 49, 48, above and below the working chamber are provided with passages 62 for supplying liquid or gaseous fuel. When solid fuel is employed, grates are arranged in the wall 52 for the chamber 47 and the flue 48. If the chamber 47 is heated internally, the gases therefrom enter a chamber 53, and may pass to the stack by opening a damper 56, or, by opening a damper 54, pass through the flue 48 to a chamber 51, whence they either escape through an outlet flue 59 or pass through the flue 49 to an outlet flue 57. If the chamber 47 is heated externally only, hot gases flow through the flue 48 and through dampered openings at each side of the chamber 53 to the flue 49 and thence to the outlet flue 59. The furnace is mounted on a central pivot or trunnion beneath it, and rests at each end upon adjustable supports 5, 5<a> actuated by worms 6, 6<a> and crank handles 8, 8<a>. Each worm may be actuated by bevel-gearing 31 on a shaft 30, which is driven by connexions between shafts 25, 23 and a longitudinal shaft 13 driving the rabbles. A reversing-clutch 26 is arranged between the shafts 13, 23. Boxes 63, 64, Fig. 3, are arranged with their edges overlapping in the furnace crown, so that the rabbles, which may be water-cooled as shown, may be readily introduced or withdrawn. The lower box is filled with bricks and clay around the shaft, heat is applied, and the space between the overlapping edges is then filled in with fire-clay, after which the upper box is filled in. Calcined material passes from the working chamber to a channel 40 provided with a push conveyer device 41, which is reciprocated by connexions with a shaft 42 actuated by spur gearing from the driving-shaft 19.
