Abstract

265,162. Krupp Grusonwerk Akt.- Ges., F. Jan. 26, 1926, [Convention date]. Arsenic, antimony, cadmium, lead, mercury, tin, and zinc sulphides and oxides; copper sulphide.-Complex ores and metallurgical products, with the addition of reducing agents. and if necessary, of sulphur, are treated for separation of their metallic constituents by partial distillation or sublimation of their sulphides in a directly heated rotary tube furnace, an oxygen-free atmosphere being maintained in and around the charge. Sand, limestone, &c. may be added to the charge if desired. For example, a complex zinc ore is treated to distil the sulphides of lead, tin, cadmium, arsenic, antimony, and mercury, and to leave a residue rich in zinc and copper sulphides. The distilled sulphides may be condensed as such, or may be converted into oxides, either outside the furnace, or bv admitting air above the charge in the furnace. The residue, whilst still hot, may be roasted, or be mixed with reducing agents and subjected to a distillation process to obtain zinc oxide. The distillation of the sulphides may be effected in one half of the furnace, and the residue be roasted during its passage through the second half of the furnace in which latter an oxidizing atmosphere is maintained. The subjectmatter of Specification 256,634 is disclaimed. The Specification, as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the following subject-matter :-Electrically or indirectly heated closed furnaces may be used, the charge being preferably agitated during treatment; or a reverberatory furnace of any kind may be used, care then being taken that the combustion gases are poor in oxygen, or that a neutral atmosphere is provided above the charge, as by adding reducing material thereto; in the latter case, the distilled sulphides may be oxidized in the higher portions of the furnace. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
