Abstract

In a process of treating ores, residues, and other metallurgical products, the material, mixed with such an amount of fuel as will effect reduction of the volatilizable metals without causing fusion of the mass during the reaction and will also provide all or part of the balance of the heat required in the process is passed through a rotary furnace in which an oxidizing atmosphere is maintained. Volatilizable metals such as zinc, tin, lead, cadmium, arsenic, antimony, and bismuth are reduced and are reoxidized on issuing from the layer of material, and are recovered in the form of oxides. Lime or like materials may in some cases be added to the charge to prevent fusion in the zone in which the zinc &c. is reduced.
